The
Gun in Docklands has quite a reputation and an awards cabinet to back it up. Located a short walk away from Canary Wharf the gastro pub offers a free taxi service to ferry diners to and from the station – full marks here especially during the winter. Set in a grade II listed building that sits right on the river bank the building has been lovingly restored and now features a bar area, dining room and outside terrace on the Thames. The menu is heavy on the fish as Billingsgate Market is 5 minutes away and like most other Ed&Martin venues (including our favs The Prince and Chiswell Street Dining Rooms) there is a focus on traditional comfort style dishes. We began with a meat pâté served with homemade bread buns as a pre-starter before moving on to a rich and creamy Cotswold Blue cheese and leek tart with toasted hazelnuts.
For mains the pork belly served on a bed of vegetables and lentils was a generous dish, the tender pork almost fell to pieces and was topped with perfectly crisped crackling. Pie of the day didn’t disappoint either – it was chicken when we visited but it changes daily. The pie was crammed with chunky meat pieces in a creamy full flavoured sauce served alongside a bowl of mashed potato, comfort food at its finest.
We’re not going to lie at this point we were stuffed but after “just a look” at the dessert menu we’d been sucked back in. The baked dulce de leche cheesecake with salted caramel popcorn was the icing on the cake, if ever there was a dessert that signified a happy ending from a Walt Disney movie this would be it.
This is one gun that fires on all cylinders and hits the bullseye every time!
