Il Calcio is an upmarket Italian restaurant which recently opened as the first UK site from chef and owner Valentino Salagean. Located in Mayfair (we said upmarket) the restaurant serves authentic Italian food, and by that we don’t pizza.

The menu on first look seems pretty big, particularly on the starter side.We went for Cozze Marinara aka mussels in tomato sauce with garlic, served in as a generous portion of juicy shellfish coated in a rich sauce. Whilst the Tartare di Salmone (take of the e’s) was a piece of art on a plate, chopped salmon with avocado and chives it tasted as good as it looked, in fact better.

For mains the oven baked free range baby chicken with rosemary was a tender bird served with a side of soft oven baked potatoes. Whilst the star of the show was the Tagliolini verdi con granchio, homemade spinach pasta, crab meat, olives, garlic and olive oil. Simple but effective the soft pasta went down a treat.

The restaurant sits within walking distance of Selfridges, why not treat the wifey next time you’re shopping.
