and Porter opened just this month on Upper Street selling killer cocktails and top notch grub in quirky, cool surrounds – it’s fair to say it’s right up our street!

The venue has been designed to look like a train carriage and every small detail has been well thought out, from the House of Hackney prints to the signs behind the door and even the teaspoons.  The menus come in a fake leather folder with gold writing on the front and fells a bit swish. We started with a couple of cocktails, the Sparkly Rum One which comes with a rose floating in it and the Barons Tipple made with overproof rum.

The food menu was one of the most appealing we’d seen in a while, we started with the seared Scallops, Celeriac Puree, Spinach, Crispy Bacon and Truffle Jus and the hearty braised Pig’s Cheek and Chorizo with Pea, Broad Beans and Fresh Mint. We couldn’t fault the food and if we had to choose the rich Pig Cheek would come out tops, a definite Autumn dish it felt slightly medieval.

Pan Fried Sea Bream, sautéed Baby Spinach and Shrimp Wiggle Crisp was another rich and creamy dish whilst cider braised Pork Belly with Bubble and Squeak was perfectly crisp on top and soft below. By now we really were stuffed, the portions are generous and the prices mean it’s bloody good value too.

We could only manage to share the Chocolate creme brulee with popping candy before rolling out and waddling home. We really can’t rate this place enough, if you haven’t already get down there sharpish because when news gets out this will get pretty busy!
