Hippodrome Casino reopened just six weeks ago following an extensive refurb. Built in 1900 The Hippodrome has a colourful past having hosted animal shows, circus acts and performances from Charlie Chapplin, Tom Jones and later Rolf Harris.

The building is now the largest casino in Britain with three floors of gambling, five bars, a dedicated poker floor, cabaret theatre and the Heliot restaurant and lounge. We went along to check out the building and sample some food. Starting with some impressive cocktails in the Heliot Bar which features a drink list created by Tony Conigliaro of 69 Colebrook Row and ZTH Bar we took our seats overlooking the main arena.

The food menu features dishes inspired by the history of the building and British classics with a twist – there are certainly a lot of appealing dishes. We started with the Tuna Tataki, Asian Apple & Herb Salad which consisted of three meaty slabs of tuna set on a crunchy salad. For mains we sampled the Millionaire’s Mac ‘n’ Cheese, a rich dish of baked macaroni & gruyere, topped with a generous amount of black truffle and poached pheasant egg. This dish is pretty hearty we can tell you!

We also tried The Shooter Sandwich which takes 14 hours to make and resembles a portion of steak pie with Rib steak, field mushrooms, caramelised onions, horseradish & Dijon. We ended with the Knickerbocker Glory, a huge glass stacked with jelly, custard, cream and crunchy glazed pineapple. We’ll bet most people who try this are pleased with their choices – well it is a casino after all.

Take Nana and Grandad they will be well impressed!
