Thelights are dimmed and a mash-up of classic rave tracks from the 90s is pumping loudly through the speakers. Have we been transported back to The Haçienda? 24 Hour Party People? Oh no, friends. We are at GrooveCycle, the new indoor cycling workout which is, safe to say, a little addictive.
Currently based at the Reebok Sports Club in Canary Wharf, this new cycling concept is all down to Sarah-Jane Aboboto – a professional choreographer and dancer. Over her 12-year career, she has danced alongside the likes of Gwen Stefani and Kylie Minogue, so definitely knows a thing or two when it comes to putting together a motivating routine.
The hour-long workout is designed to work your entire body, and engulf you with happy endorphins. And this, it certainly did. Burning up to 1,000 calories, the sessions mix up interval pedalling, multiple sets of push-ups on the handlebars and choreographed dance arm movements using a variety of weights.
All the routines are choreographically specifically to selected tracks – anything from rave, jungle, hip hop to old school R&B. These all emphasise the feeling of dance, and before we knew it, we too were singing and dancing along to some old favourites.
We finished the class with jelly-like legs and a huge smile across our face. Sarah-Jane’s enthusiasm and drive during the session is infectious. GrooveCycle is certainly not your average spin class, and we commend anyone who doesn’t become an addict. Happy pedalling, you know you want to.
