the hottest day of the year so far, we couldn’t have picked a better place to have dinner than the Funthyme Supperclub at Spitalfields City Farm. With a long communal table set out in a cosy corner of the farm, surrounded by trees and flower beds, it was the perfect setting for dinner, cooked by Matt Phelps of Funthyme.

Using flowers and vegetables (but thankfully not farm animals) in the dishes wherever possible, we started with the freshest just-picked peas still in the pods and drizzled with olive oil. Other pre-dinner snacks included smoked duck with thyme and honey roast grapes; Russian salad and anchovies in baby gem leaves; and sourdough with farm herb whipped butter. Then came Salmorejo, a gazpacho style soup with chopped egg and salami, and the main event which we’d already spied on the BBQ – beautiful picanha beef, served with saffron potatoes and salad, again both grown on the farm. Dessert was a simple but tasty polenta cake with cherries.

Matt is running several more dinners at the farm this summer and we highly recommend you get yourself down to one sharpish.
