REVIEW: CHICKEN TOWN
Theremight be 34 chicken joints within a mile radius of Chicken Town, but this one definitely isn’t wingin’ it. Taking roost in Tottenham, the non-profit social enterprise gently steams Swaledale herb-fed free-range birds before flash-frying them in rapseecd oil, cutting the calories with a third of the fat, half of the saturated fat and an eighth of the salt compared to your usual greasy joint. That’s gotta mean guilt-free fried chicken, right? PRAISE THE LORD.
Of course the thought of healthy fried chicken, got us CLUCKIN’ excited so we just had to go and check it out. Kicking off with some HOT and sticky Korean Wings and Beavertown’s Blood Orange IPA, we were nicely warmed up for a selection of classic, SAS (smoked chicken with a spiced crumb) and Fancy Pants, rosemary and lemon crusted chicken pieces. Juicy, but not greasy, there is definitely nothing FOWL about this fried chicken. And when it came to sides we were spoilt for choice and finally decided on the skin-on-fries, fresh greens in garlic oil and mac ‘n’ cheese (OBVS – because when chicken is THAT healthy you can afford some indulgence, right?).
With everything cooked from scratch, using seasonal ingredients Chicken Town have really gone to TOWN with this one.
