the hokey-poke. We’ve been hearing news of poke’s popularity in the USA for a while now and we’ve seen it on a fair few menus in London of late but now we have our very own poke bar. Black Roe opened in Mayfair in March 2016 from the guys who run Chotto Matte in Soho. Inside it’s dark interiors, loud music and neon lights, including one which says ‘enjoy the silence’; ironic as the place is anything but silent…

The menu follows the ‘fun theme’, we kicked off with the Shuck Shack cocktails made with yuzu sake, aperol, mezcal, peach, grapefruit, sea salt. We ordered A LOT of food, highlights included the Black Roe ahi and yellowtail poke with a punchy spicy yuzu salsa, generously filled lobster and crab pot stickers with tangy ponzu sauce and the giant prawn tempura with truffle mayo. Then there’s the garlic butter fries with yuzu mayo dip – the dip’s so good we ordered extra pots of each to go with the meaty cajun blackened seabags.

If you do find you’re still hungry then check out the Shake & Bake, possibly the biggest dessert we’ve ever come across. But be warned it will defeat you and you will wanna go straight home to rest. All in all a cracking meal – just turn the music down a notch please, we’ll head to the club if we want perforated eardrums.
