Printworks Could be Reopening as a Cultural Venue in 2026

The iconic nightclub set inside a former printing press closed last May

After opening in 2017 in Surrey Quays, Printworks quickly became one of the most beloved nightclubs in the city and over the six years it was open, it played host to some of the biggest DJs in the world and attracted more than 2.5 million visitors. Ravers said farewell to the club last spring after a massive final season, featuring the likes of Peggy Gou, Jamie xx, Bicep, Bonobo and Jayda G, though it was unclear whether that farewell was a ‘see ya later’ or a ‘goodbye forever’.

Now it’s looking like it was the former as developers British Land and fund AustralianSuper have submitted plans to Southwark Council to re-open the site as a hybrid cultural venue and office block in partnership with Broadwick Live (who operated the club and also run the cavernous Drumsheds in Tottenham). The architecture of the site doesn’t look to be changing but in its new iteration, the press halls won’t be one big dancefloor but rather a space for concerts, immersive shows and events. Second room Inkwells will remain and play host to exhibitions, gigs and more intimate events, and there’ll also be another events space on the roof. The other half of the venue, called the Grand Press, will be dedicated to workspaces and retail.

Speaking about the plans, Emma Cariaga, joint head of Canada Water at British Land, said, “We want to deliver a permanent world-class cultural venue at Printworks that builds on its globally acclaimed legacy. Combining the best of the capital’s culture with next generation workspace at The Grand Press will create an unrivalled experiential destination, which generations will benefit from for years to come.”

The developers are hoping to receive planning permission from the council within the next few months, with the aim of re-opening Printworks in 2026.
