Prince Arthur, Belgravia Review | “A Bling Belgravia Pub from an Ex-Brat Chef”

Prince Arthur is a refurbished Belgravia pub that opened quietly in January

It’s been getting a fair amount of attention for its food, courtesy of chef Adam Iglesias, who hails from San Sebastián and has done stints at Brat and Barrafina. Downstairs is a pub that’s roughly divided in half between proper pub and dining room, and coming soon upstairs will be a more restaurant-style space.

Eat This

Given the chef’s roots and the Brat connection, it’s no surprise to see a largely Basque-style menu here, centred around top notch seafood (displayed on a raw counter at the bar – a first for a pub?) and meat cooked over a huge state-of-the-art grill. The menu is divided very simply into Small Plates; larger Wood-Grilled dishes; and sides, and all are small enough that you can get a good spread between two people.

Highlights from the snacks include the glidas; the txangurro crab on top of crisp ‘turbot dripping’ potatoes (there is also a version with tuna, caviar, and sea urchin on the same potato but the crab one is better); the brilliant devilled egg with a dollop of the pub’s own caviar; and best of all, the cured ‘otoro’ tuna belly.

From the wood grill, there are Basque classics like whole turbot and ex-dairy beef, but we went for a very nice lobster rice with saffron aioli, and the wild mushrooms with egg yolk. For dessert, there’s an exceptionally good and gooey Basque cheesecake that shouldn’t be missed.

Drink This

There’s a big beer and ale line up from British breweries, as well as Estrella and a big focus on Guinness, which is supposedly served with the same installations as you’d find in Ireland. There’s also a line up of cocktails, high end spirits, and a big list of champagnes and fine wines, from Ruinart to Olivier Leflaive in Burgundy.

Why Go

If you live in the area, or are looking for somewhere fairly casual to eat in Belgravia, then Prince Arthur is well worth taking a look at. It’s not cheap but given the area and the produce used it’s largely what you’d expect.
