Decanter World Wine Awards has spoken, and there's gold on those supermarket shelves
Buying wine in the supermarket can feel like a lucky dip. One bottle’s a bargain, the next is destined for cooking. Luckily, the judges at Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) have done the hard work for you.
Now in its 23rd year, DWWA is widely regarded as the world’s leading wine competition. Thousands of wines are blind tasted by hundreds of the world’s top wine experts, with only the very best earning a medal. Think of it as the wine world’s Olympics.
At the very top are the coveted Best in Show medals, awarded to just 50 wines worldwide (that’s only 0.3% of every wine tasted). Then come Platinum and Gold, reserved for wines scoring 95 points or more. Keep an eye out too for Top Value Gold, a medal reserved for exceptional wines priced under £15 at the time of judging, because that’s where your weekly shop gets interesting.
The good news? You don’t need to visit a wine merchant to drink award-winning wine. Major UK supermarkets performed brilliantly this year, with medal-winning bottles now sitting on shelves at Tesco, Co-op, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer, meaning your next supermarket shop could easily include one of the world’s best wines.
