Lambeth Council and developers London Square have revealed plans for a new mixed-use development
Pop Brixton has a been a buzzing community hub in Brixton for a decade, hosting regular parties and sports screenings and housing street food traders, bars, and creative businesses in its assortment of upcycled shipping containers – popular Indian restaurant Kricket even started life there way back when the space first opened.
Though it’s been a popular spot with customers, Pop Brixton has been operating at a loss for many years, with Brixton Buzz regularly reporting on the lack of profit it generated and Lambeth Council’s continual extensions of the venue’s temporary lease. If these development plans go through, it could finally be the end for Pop Brixton.
The scheme, a joint venture from Lambeth Council and London Square, proposes the erection of two towers – one 17 storeys high and one 20 storeys high – at 49 Brixton Station Road (where Pop Brixton is currently located), and the extension of International House at 6 Canterbury Crescent to 14 storeys. The development would provide around 280 new homes, with at least 40% of them being affordable, plus 4400 sqm of workspace, an enterprise hub, and 4750 sqm of improved public spaces, including play areas, seating and rain gardens.
These are only draft proposals at the moment and are currently under public consultation (you can provide your feedback here). Another round of consultations is slated for October, with planning submission earmarked for November. If successful, construction is estimated to begin in mid-2027 and finish in 2030.
However, there’s still a long way to go before this gets over the line, if at all. Brixton locals scuppered Texan billionaire Taylor McWilliams’ plans to build a 20-storey block next to Brixton Market in 2023, so it’ll be interesting to see how they respond to these plans.
