of pizzas have been served up by Pizza Express since the first branch opened in Soho in 1965, helping to establish them as one of the most-popular chains in the UK, now with over 400 branches around the country. But one thing has always been missing from the menu, a calzone, but, better late than never, the Pizza Express calzone is about to be launched.

Calzones have been around for years, originating as street food in Italy, as a pizza able to be eaten on the move. Made in the same way as a regular pizza and then folded in half and sealed, the toppings are steamed within the dough making it crispy on the outside and molten in the centre, perfect to pick up and eat with the hands. Like a giant pasty!

The creation on the menu in Pizza Express will be the Calzone Prosciutto Pesto, a huge crescent of thin dough, stuffed with ham hock, roasted mushrooms and red onions, fresh spinach, mozzarella and gruyere, Parmesan and pesto sauce. Don’t be alarmed by the lack of tomato, the rich cheesy sauce more than compensates. It’s a beast of a meal; warm, filling and not to be attempted by those looking for a light lunch.

If this version is successful, it’s surely only a matter of time before the range is extended to include vegetarian fillings or perhaps spicy tomato versions. Two new creations which will definitely be on the menu however will be Polpette Piccante – meatballs in bolognese sauce – and polenta chips which we already can’t get enough of. Fluffy centres with a crisp exterior and coated in rosemary and Grana Padano, they’re our new favourite side dish.

The calzone, meatballs and polenta chips are available now – lap it up people.
