Paul Mescal, star of Normal People and newly Oscar-nominated for his performance in Aftersun, is currently starring (and receiving raves) in a sold-out run of Tennessee Williams classic A Streetcar Named Desire at the Almeida Theatre. If you didn’t manage to nab tickets, we’ve got some good news – the production is transferring to the Phoenix Theatre in the West End in March after it finishes up in Islington in early February with the same principal cast in tow.
The play follows faded Southern belle Blanche DuBois as she moves into the New Orleans apartment shared by her sister Stella and Stella’s husband Stanley, where the past becomes exposed and violent conflict ensues. Mescal, in a very different role to Connell (and his chain) is playing the iconic role of Stanley Kowalski, most famously done by Marlon Brando in the 1951 film adaption, with Patsy Ferran playing Blanche and Anjana Vasan of We Are Lady Parts playing Stella. Rebecca Frecknell, who directed a revival of another Williams play Summer & Smoke at the Almeida a few years ago, is directing so it’s all set to be a seamless transfer.
