The ‘This Is Oxford Street’ event will showcase the Mayor of London’s vision for pedestrianising the street
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan is already moving forward with the pedestrianisation of Oxford Street, following “overwhelming support” for the project following public consultations. The Mayor is keen for this to happen as quickly as possible and we’re expecting proposals on re-routing the buses and removing the traffic from the street later this year, ahead of changes being implemented by 2027. But before that, we’re getting a little taster of what a traffic-free Oxford Street would be like as the street will be empty of all cars, buses and cabs from noon to 8pm on Sun 21st September.
As well as getting rid of the vehicles for the day, the thoroughfare will also play host to ‘This Is Oxford Street’, a free event featuring food and drink stalls, bar and coffee pop-ups, live music and performances, sporting showcases from the likes of Major League Baseball, a Holland & Barrett wellness village, a Choose Love charity zone and more.
Speaking about the event, Sadiq Khan said: “It will offer Londoners, visitors, and businesses a glimpse of what the nation’s high street could look like in the future.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to see Oxford Street in a whole new light: traffic-free, filled with music, great food, pop-ups and entertainment for everyone. As Mayor, I’m determined to unlock Oxford Street’s true potential and deliver a world-class, accessible, clean avenue.
“Add the date to your diary. It’s going to be a fantastic day out as we reimagine the West End.”
