Oh Gee Review | “It’s a Proper Bit of Fun”

Championship-winning Korean fried chicken has landed in London

When it comes to fried chicken, Chef Byungtae Ahn knows what he’s doing – he won Netflix’s K-Chicken War in 2022 and went on to launch 101 Chicken in New Jersey. Now he’s come to the UK capital, teaming up with The Hoxton, Shoreditch, to launch the Oh Gee pop-up

Eat This

Korean fried chicken, aka yangnyeom dak, is the star of the show. The batter is properly crunchy and craggy enough to hold the glazes, which include sweet & spicy, soy honey and supreme.

The potato crisp coating is Chef Ahn’s signature, so you’ve got to try it in some form – you can get the chicken as pieces (we had this covered in the sweet & spicy glaze) and in burgers, like the 101 potato crispy chicken bun with 101 supreme sauce and hot honey. You really can taste the crisps in the coating and it’s a very decent chicken burger, a bit of a task to keep hold of all the fillings but worth the effort.

Besides the birds, there is a mix of more traditional Korean dishes like bibim guksu (spicy cold noodles with chilli sauce, pickles and egg yolk) and rice cake skewers with deokbokki glaze, and fusion creations, including a smash burger with kimchi ragu and Buldak spicy pot noodle with ribeye steak. And they bring out little complimentary snacks, like pickled cucumbers and potato salad, before your order arrives which is a nice touch.

You’ll wanna save room for the ‘croffle’ ice cream sandwich too. Consisting of two pieces of waffle made from caramelised croissant dough with vanilla ice cream and cinnamon hotteok sauce, it’s totally indulgent.

Drink This

There’s a selection of soju and makgeolli on the menu but the cocktails are where it’s at. There are bomb drinks (where you drop shots of soju into lager) and sharing bevs served in light-up cocktail towers and from toy fire extinguishers. That last one is the vessel for the 3x Spicy Marg, made with Altos Plata Tequila, JINRO Chamisul peach, gochujang, lime, agave and a thick rim of spicy salt, and it’s a winner.

Why Go

If you like KFC, and no, not the kind the Colonel makes, then the birds at Oh Gee are well worth a try. And it’s a proper bit of fun, especially if you round up your pals and get the sharing cocktails on order.
