Elliott Kaye, the chef behind Norman‘s greasy-spoon-gone-good reinvention, is opening his first solo venture. Marrion’s is a neighbourhood bar landing on Hackney’s Morning Lane on Thursday 10th September, open Thursday to Saturday evenings with brunch on Sundays. It’s a site that’s seen a fair bit of turnover, originally opening as Nest before becoming Big Night, and now taking on its third life as Marrion’s. It’s the kind of place designed to work for both a quick drink at the bar and a proper sit-down dinner, something Kaye has plenty of pedigree in, having come up through Lyle’s, The French House and Leroy before opening Norman’s in 2020.
The food carries the same unfussy, nostalgic spirit as Norman’s: Devilled Crab Rarebit, Pork Schnitzel Holstein with capers and a fried egg, Moules Frites, and a classic Cheeseburger, alongside a handful of house sandwiches including Kaye’s favourite, the Tuna Melt. Drinks are just as pared back, with cocktails built around stripped-back classics (a house martini rotates monthly, launching with the Yellow Chartreuse-based Puritan), a concise but considered wine list from the likes of Tutto Wines and Sager & Wine, and a single beer on draft, Victoria Málaga, served in Spanish cañas glasses.
Sundays bring a brunch menu of Boiled Eggs with Anchovy Soldiers, a Lox Bagel, Baked Eggs with Vodka Sauce and Melon with Cottage Cheese and Cured Meats, alongside locally roasted Dark Arts Coffee. The space itself is intimate and dimly lit, with bespoke wooden tables, a kitchen hatch counter and vintage mirrors, very much designed as somewhere to settle in rather than pass through.
