Natty Can Cook Has Taken Over the Kitchen at The Greyhound

There’s a new resident at the Peckham pub

The Cause team certainly have been busy this summer; not only have they just opened a restaurant and hi-fi bar, The Marquee Moon in Dalston, they’ve brought in a new kitchen concept at their Peckham boozer The Greyhound. Nathaniel Morley aka Natty Can Cook has taken over the stoves and is serving up his refined take on Caribbean food at the pub.

And it’s something of a full-circle moment for Nathaniel. Growing up in the area, he began his career as a chef as a way to stay off the streets after being stabbed at 16. Following stints at the likes of Oblix and City Social and catering events like the 2012 Olympics, he fell back into crime and ended up serving time at HMP Brixton, where he cooked at inmate-run restaurant The Clink. Since then, it’s been his goal to showcase Caribbean food and provide a space where ex-convicts can turn their lives around through cooking, which is what he’s doing at The Greyhound.

As Nathaniel explains: “The mission is to open a charity, starting here at The Greyhound, which will help to employ ex-convicts and help them turn their life around, because there’s not a lot of opportunity for people when they come out. I know the power hospitality can have to help achieve your goals and dreams having been through The Clink project at HMP Brixton, and of those others who have also participated, 87% of them haven’t turned back to crime again. We’ll be working closely with The Clink to begin with, sourcing our chefs directly from the project, and with time, our mission is only going to get bigger.”

You can help support Nathaniel by heading down to the pub for some food – he’s created a menu that blends his Jamaican family recipes with French techniques, with dishes like:

  • plantain veloute with carrot & plantain bhaji and avocado purée
  • rice & peas arancini
  • BBQ black cod with coriander & roasted corn salsa
  • pork belly with scotch bonnet mayo and pickled plantain
  • soft shell crab with scotch bonnet & tomato veloute and lime mayo
  • jerk chicken supreme with brown butter mash and tempura prawns
  • plantain cake with white chocolate ganache, chocolate soil and lime chantilly

If that sounds right up your street, the Natty Can Cook residency is running at The Greyhound from Tuesdays – Sundays.
