New films, a UK premiere and a rare focus on animals instead of people
The Hayward Gallery will host Nan Goldin’s first UK institutional show since 2002 from 24 November, closing out the Southbank Centre’s 75th anniversary year. The exhibition, You Never Did Anything Wrong, centres on a new film shot in collaboration with filmmaker David Sherman, screening alongside its 2024 predecessor, both marking a shift away from Goldin’s usual focus on human relationships towards animal consciousness and the natural world. The first film centres on a solar eclipse and is dedicated to Sulala Animal Rescue in Gaza, while the second reworks found footage from 1960s and 70s nature documentaries into something closer to a meditation on extinction.
Also showing: the UK premiere of Stendhal Syndrome, which places Goldin’s photographs of friends and lovers alongside classical artworks, and Memory Lost, her earlier slideshow work on addiction and drug use, made in connection with the activist group she founded, P.A.I.N.
Tickets go on general sale on Friday 17th July, with a £7.50 offer running for the exhibition’s opening two weeks.
