Joké Bakare drops the set menu for a summer of suya in Fitzrovia.
Chishuru has run on a set menu since it opened in Fitzrovia. From 22 July that changes. Summer Suya Sessions is the restaurant’s first proper à la carte run, and it takes its cue from suya, the spiced, charred skewers sold from roadside grills across northern Nigeria. The spice in question is yaji, a peanut and chilli blend rubbed into the meat before it hits the flame. It’s late-night, hand-held, eat-it-standing-up food, and Bakare is bringing it into a Michelin dining room without losing any of the swagger. Plates start at £7 which is a bargain!
The menu features dishes like Suya-spiced bavette skewers, lamb tongue with green strawberries, chicken offal sausages with plantain molasses, whole prawns slicked in yaji butter, and a spaghetti jollof the kitchen is fairly openly hoping turns into a cult dish. Larger plates run to whole seabass with scent leaf gremolata, or a lamb Barnsley chop with slow-cooked onions and mustard. Rotating housemade ice creams see you out.
Drinks lean the same way. A yaji pineapple margarita with mezcal and a peanut-spice edge, a two-glass ògógóró serve called Push Me, I Push You, and wines from the French producers Bakare rates. It runs Wednesday evenings only through to 26th August. Book early, this is gonna be a hot ticket.
