Not content with opening a market in Mayfair and another food hub in Elephant & Castle, the Mercato Metropolitano team is heading east (way east) and opening in Ilford. Taking over an old car park, the market will have space for 30 stalls (including pan-Asian, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean traders and low packaging grocery stores) and 600 people but the real focus of the place will be sustainability.
Not only will there be a farm on the roof of the market, which’ll produce enough veg and herbs to feed 100,000, the building itself has been designed to be zero-waste and the stalls themselves will all have zero-waste policies too. Even the on-site German craft brewery will be producing mineral water as well as beer.
