MASAJ has opened in Islington Square, and its deep tissue work is intense.
We’re long time fans of MASAJ, going back to when it was a single shipping container near London Fields. The brand has come a long way now on it’s third London studio in Islington Square, behind Upper Street in the old sorting office. Skilled therapists, no scripted routines, every session built in the room around whatever your body is doing that day.
You pick your oil, your music, talking or silence. Then you say what you want, which is the bit that matters. Ask for deep tissue and they take you at your word. Ours found a knot we’d been carrying since 2019 and went after it like someone defusing a bomb. It hurt, the kind of hurt that makes noises you wouldn’t want overheard. Let’s hope the rooms are soundproofed.
That’s MASAJ or mass hard. The session is shaped around you, so it’s exactly as gentle or as brutal as you ask. Some people leave wishing they’d pushed for more. We did not have that problem. Want to drift off to something ambient? Say so. Want your back physically renegotiated? Also available.
We left loose, puffy eyed and like we were floating out. We hit the sauna afterwards to help with our aches though we have one seriously sore ass today.
Open seven days, late, from £70 for 30 minutes to £200 for two hours. The 60 minute deep tissue at £115 is the sweet spot if you’ve been spending too much time hunched over the laptop.
