Uber cool French hotel group Mama Shelter has properties in ten cities already and now it’s added London to the list. Open on the site of the former RE Hotel on Hackney Road, Mama London, designed by Dion & Arles, has 195 rooms in three sizes – small, medium and large plus an underground suite – all of which come with double beds, free wifi and movies, Mama Skin products and 49″ Samsung tellies. As Mama Shelter is all about being social, there’s a large lobby and other communal spaces to work and hang in outside of the bedrooms.
And you don’t need to be staying the night to visit Mama as there’s an in-house restaurant and terrace – the eclectic menu features pork belly boas, crab doughnuts, croque monsieurs, hake ceviche and aubergine parmigiana, as well as local classics like pie, mash & liquor and shellfish platters, plus live music brunch on the weekends. Once you’re done eating there’s also table football, giant Twister and a couple of karaoke rooms to try out.
