Matcha fans learn how to master the art of the perfect cuppa
Matcha is having one of those moments. It’s on every coffee menu in London, it’s clogging your feed, and a global shortage has sent wholesale prices through the roof. Most of what’s being whisked in the city right now bears only a passing resemblance to the stone-ground, shade-grown stuff that’s been part of Japanese ritual for five centuries. Which is why we’re doing something about it. On Sunday 28th June, KURO Coffee at Harvey Nichols is hosting a small-group masterclass for our INSIDERS, led by Izzy of Tea-Lili, who knows what she’s doing with a chasen.
You’ll start with a guided introduction to matcha. Where it comes from, why the good stuff is greener than seems reasonable, what shading does to the leaves, and how to actually taste the difference between something ceremonial and something destined for a latte. Then Izzy walks you through the whisking. The wrist movement that builds the foam, how to handle water temperature, and how to make a bowl you’d happily serve someone. You’ll prepare your own matcha and drink it in KURO’s deep red, clean-lined Knightsbridge room. A Sunday morning at its most useful: slow, specific, and entirely about getting one thing right.
Numbers are capped at eight. Tickets are £35 and include a full session with Izzy, a hands-on tasting and preparation experience, plus a goody bag containing a £10 KURO voucher and a pastry to take away.
INSIDERS can book their tickets for the matcha masterclass at KURO Harvey Nichols on Sun 28th June for £35 below. If you’re not a member yet, sign up below for just £2 a month. INSIDERS get access to hand-picked experiences, exclusive masterclasses and members-only offers, all curated by our editors for less than the price of a coffee.
