Citizens of Soil

Ever thought about how the olive oil on your kitchen counter or the supermarket shelf got there? Sarah Vachon does – a lot. She was so passionate about getting good quality olive oil to consumers that she co-founded Citizens of Soil, a business that sources artisanal olive oils direct from the people that make it. Not only does Citizens of Soil pay the producers a fair and equitable price for their oils, which helps to build a community around what has always been seen as a commodity, it champions female growers (sourcing from groves that are least 50% female-led) and those using regenerative farming methods. All the extra virgin olive oils that Citizens of Soil sources and sells are high quality, nutritious and fully traceable. The brand also works to minimise its own impact on the environment by using recyclable refill pouches and refillable bottles for its subscription service. Any oil that gets damaged along the supply chain gets donated to food waste and food rescue charities, so nothing gets wasted.
