When their son Felix died suddenly from meningitis, Jane and Justin Byam Shaw decided to commemorate him by founding The Felix Project. Taking inspiration from the time Felix attended a football tournament and was shocked to learn that many of the boys playing hadn’t eaten anything that day, The Felix Project tackles both food waste and hunger by rescuing food that would otherwise be going to waste and redistributing it to those in need via a network of over 1200 community organisations. As well as distributing fresh food and cupboard staples across the city, through Felix’s Kitchen the charity also turns those ingredients into nutritious ready-to-eat meals that be can sent to communities and schools. With new service Felix’s Multibank, the charity helps supply local organisations with non-food related items like toiletries, baby products and household goods. In 2024 The Felix Project redistributed over 16,000 tonnes of food, prepared over 1.3 million meals, and redistributed over a million non-food items to those in need.
