Even if you haven’t realised it, you’ve almost certainly come across a Sports Banger t-shirt. Founder Jonny Banger has been responsible for some of the most iconic slogan tees of the last decade. ‘Free Tulisa’ is one of his, so is ‘Team Nigella’, ‘Fuck Boris’ and the one with the NHS logo above the Nike swoosh. Rooted in rave and streetwear aesthetics, Banger’s bootlegs are about subversion and resistance – the NHS tee was created in response to the 2015 junior doctors strike and was then used to raise money for the health service during the pandemic. He also started The Covid Letters project during lockdown asking young people to customise the letter that Boris Johnson sent out to every household as restrictions were imposed, to articulate their feelings about the government, the pandemic and the NHS and transform the letter into a protest poster.
