LOTI EATS | TOWNSEND

Located in the Whitechapel Gallery, Townsend launched to rave reviews just before lockdown kicked in. Talk about timing! Pivoting to a delivery business pretty fast, it’s good to see the restaurant back up and running, serving British food from Joe Fox (ex-Petersham Nurseries).

If you’ve visited the dining room previously, then in terms of design not much has changed – however, it’s the food that is the main attraction. The menu reads so well, it’s genuinely difficult to decide and even more difficult for the server taking the order given we changed our mind a fair few times. We kicked off with some of the staple snacks; the Devon blue cheese croquettes with fermented chill and the juicy marinated tomatoes smoked rapeseed oil alongside some Vault Vermouth made in the rolling hills of London.

We followed with the spiced aubergine, marinated peppers and ticklemore salad and soft hen egg, anchovy mayo and broccoli. Really simple dishes, unfussy but well put together using quality ingredients and winning flavour combinations. Other highlights included the breaded pork loin, whipped cods roe and pickled cabbage – a modern, British take on the schnitzel – whilst the pink fir potatoes, smoked chilli and garlic sauce were more than just a bit on the side.

We finished with a very good Eton mess and treacle tart, leaving full and satisfied. A faultless long lunch, no egos, no over-promises just bloody good food and not a micro-herb in site.
