loti eats: perilla

After first impressing us at their pop-up down south, Perilla moved into our neighbourhood, located in a pretty site on Newington Green with big windows, rickety wooden furniture and a warm, cosy feel. The owners both have impressive CVs even though they are both mid-twenties and the emphasis really is on the food – think fine dining dishes without the fuss.

Both times we’ve visited we had the tasting menu which, priced at under £40, it’d be rude not too. The menu starts with a small amuse bouche followed by a slab of incredible seaweed bread brushed with lamb fat. SO GOOD.

The menu changes frequently so we won’t list all our courses but if the cuttlefish ‘bolognese’ or the duck egg with mussels and parsley is on offer and you’re not going for the tasting menu, be sure to order these. What is consistent though is the quality of each course, the flavours and textures are perfectly matched and even the most simple sounding dishes wouldn’t be outta place in a Michelin-stared restaurant.

We were a little disappointed by the matching wines that went with the tasting menu, however, so skip these and order a bottle or glass of something you like… It might be a little late in the year for resolutions but we’ve just put more frequent trips to Perilla at the top of ours!
