loti eats: kikuchi

Top rate sushi isn’t hard to find in London but you have to be prepared to pay a little more for it. Kikuchi, located on a quiet street that joins the chaos of Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road, is one such spot, a small space that offers a set menu of sushi for £100 per person (and a la carte too if you want a quick bite).

We went for the full set menu and we were very impressed with both the quality of sushi and the amount we were served – honestly we rolled out of there stuffed! The menu will change depending on which fish is best that day but it will always follow the same format.

We began with a selection of sashimi, including two beautiful pieces of one of our favourites – fatty tuna! Next was a beautiful red mullet carpaccio served with ponzu sauce and possibly one of the best dishes of the night.

From the tempura selection that followed, we loved the sea urchin, having never had sea urchin done tempura style before. Then was the main event, 12 pieces of premium sushi including fatty tuna (again!), scallop, seared salmon, and unagi (eel) which we saved for last – yes it was EEL-Y good.

Kikuchi isn’t the swishest place in town, and certainly not the cheapest, but if you want some pretty special sushi without flying to Japan this is well worth checking out.
