We love a hatch serving up crazy good grub in the arse-end of nowhere. We’ve hunted them out around the world, crossing motorways and mountains to find them so we were more than happy to do a 20,000 step round trip to From The Ashes BBQ in Hackney Wick.
Set up in lockdown by three chefs who found themselves unemployed, the hatch is responsible for THOSE ndjua donuts you might have seen on Instagram (exhibit A). These fluffy, sugary donuts are stuffed with ndjua, chilli jam, BBQ sauce, smoked pork shoulder and crackling dust and are worth a visit alone – and are guaranteed to rack up likes on the ‘gram.
Other killer dishes include crisp beef fat potatoes with smoked garlic mayo; BBQ beans with burnt ends; and a smoked pork bun with pickles, sriracha marmite mayo and smoked garlic mayo. The menu is focused around smoke, fat and flavour so the everything on there is pretty much a dead cert, and yes there are even veggie dishes too.
