The Colonel and his 11-spice rendition has been frequenting high streets for as long as we can remember, but now, decent fried chicken is just as easy to find. The newest chick on the block is Brixton’s Fancy Funkin Chicken, set up by a trio of foodies – Nathan Pattie (co-founder of PIX), Rollo Weeks (formerly of Sketch) and Lars Larson (formerly of Cuckoo) – and packed with quality free-range birds,
We started off by checking out the well-edited but no-fuss cocktail list – the Raspberry Gin Jam is perfect for those who want to hit their 5-a-day quota. To start we shared some of the Funkin Hot Wings, which were tangy and spicy but not enough to blow your head off…spice fiends should instead order the aptly named I Can’t Feel My Funking Face Hot Wings (see what they did there?). Burgers come with a choice: thigh or breast, fried or flame grilled. Breast is best (FACT) so we opted for the Tropical Burger, complete with charred pineapple, and the fried Funkin Hot Burger with mac & cheese and chilli cheese fries on the side. Flavourful and soft yet crispy, the crew at Fancy Funkin Chicken have winged it with high quality comfort food.
This is mother clucking dirty food that requires at least two napkins to clean up with – and that’s a funkin’ good thing.
