loti eats | blacklock shoreditch

Not content with bringing quality chops to the people of Soho and the City, Blacklock has gone further east and opened in Shoreditch, taking over the old Rivington Grill site. The team has stripped the space right back to reveal some of its old features (it used to be a furniture maker’s factory) and Blacklock-ified it with lots of dark wood, exposed brick and cast iron.

It’s the biggest Blacklock yet meaning there’s room for a dedicated bar area, and there’s been no messing around here; the cocktail list has been created in collaboration with NYC bar Slowly Shirely. The Village Bicycle made with vodka, vermouth, kaffir lime, lychee and ginger, is well worth a ride. They also have a separate bar food menu featuring treats like Welsh rarebit nuggets and mini Yorkshire puds with melted black pudding, though sadly this was not yet in action on our visit.

The main food menu is the same as at the other two locations and as well as what’s on the card, a whole load of special cuts are chalked up on blackboards. After an excellent starter of tender grilled squid with rich bone marrow, we went ALL IN. This is the best way to go in our eyes, especially if you haven’t been to Blacklock in a while (or ever). As well as the three varieties of pre-chop bites, like little canapes, you get a pile of perfectly cooked beef, lamb and pork chops sat on top of thick fingers of flatbread, so all those meaty juices run down and soak in.

For our two sides, we opted for the beef dripping fries and charred courgettes, chicory and stilton – you’ve gotta eat your greens after all, even if they are topped with blue cheese. We’re big fans of the green sauce – the herb mix goes particularly well with the lamb – and we were also recommended the chilli hollandaise, which made for great dipping with the fries so we’re now recommending it to you.

If you have any room left after that lot there’s have a couple of desserts on offer too. We just about managed their white chocolate cheesecake, which was super light and not oversweet as many a white chocolate dessert can be, scooped out from a family size dish tableside.

Blacklock is one of our fave London restaurants and they’ve raised that high standard over in Shoreditch. Here’s hoping that now there are 3 sites we’ll finally be able to score a table and go back for THAT for Sunday roast.
