It’s been a while coming but Allegra is finally open at The Stratford, the new high rise luxury hotel and apartment building in… yes, Stratford. The chef behind Allegra is Patrick Powell who was previously in charge at Chiltern Firehouse, so as you might expect, this is one that a lot of people have been looking forward to.

The restaurant is on the 7th floor of The Stratford and has its own lift that opens right out into the bar area. The restaurant of the restaurant wraps around the bar and each area has been cleverly sectioned off into smaller parts so it doesn’t feel like you’re sitting in the middle of a huge space. There’s also a very nice outdoor terrace which will be the place to be once the weather comes good again.

Patrick has smashed it with the food here, with a menu that uses a lot of produce grown on his own farm just outside London. It’s one of those menus that makes choosing very difficult but a few things you definitely shouldn’t miss include the pistachio choux buns filed with smooth chicken liver parfait; the pithivier, a beautiful round sphere of pastry stuffed with smoked eel; and the delicate crab tart topped with a light brown butter hollandaise, which was a contender for dish of the night.

Alongside the list of the mains there are also a few larger sharing dishes and we went for the whole roast chicken, which had been stuffed with cep mushrooms just under its crisp, golden skin. It was beautifully cooked and served with smoked sweetcorn, pickled jalapeño and tarragon. We’d recommend getting a side of grilled potatoes to go with it too.

For dessert, the confit apple mille-feuille is exceptional, like an amped up apple crumble with crisp layers of pastry and salted caramel and vanilla ice cream.

For anyone that lives in Stratford, Allegra is an incredible restaurant to have on your doorstep and if we lived or worked around here we’d be regulars. For anyone else though, it’s definitely worth making the journey to eat here, so we’d recommend adding it to your hit list asap.
