WHAT TO SEE AT LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL 2023

London Design Festival is back for 2023 and it’s going to be a big celebration of all things design. 2023 is the 300th anniversary of Sir Christopher Wren’s death, so the two Landmark Projects of this year’s LDF will explore the architect’s legacy and engage with his work from a modern viewpoint. Here are our top installations and exhibitions to see this LDF…

Aura by Pablo Valbuena

Spanish artist Pablo Valbuena is exploring contemporary rituals and what a temple means in today’s world with his light and sound installation Aura at St Paul’s Cathedral. The piece takes all the sounds generated inside the cathedral and translates them into a pulsating line of light.

The LEGO Piece Garden

LEGO is gonna be setting up shop in Shoreditch during the London Design Festival for a pop-up ‘Piece Garden’ where guests can build their own LEGO flowers. Entry is free and you’ll get to enjoy a moment of peace while you create some colourful blooms which will live on the wall of the pop-up. Plus, you can sign up for workshops here, where artists in residence will guide you through creating your own painted, collaged or drawn masterpeice.

Halo by Studio Waldemeyer

This light installation, set inside St Stephen Walbrook Church (which was designed by Sir Christopher Wren), has been created to encourage people to explore the spirituality of the surroundings. Halo features a conical pendulum that traces a halo of light around the church’s altar, designed by Henry Moore, as well as slow-moving illuminations in the church’s dome to enhance the celestial theme.

Nice to Meet You Again

With Nice to Meet You Again, Morag Myerscough is working with MINI to create a bold immersive installation that showcases the brand’s vision for the future based around its electric cars. The installation will feature Morag’s signature vibrant patterns, a bird soundscape and natural, seasonal smells in an effort to bring the country into the city.

Spirit of Place by Simone Brewster

In collaboration with cork producer Amorim, Simone Brewster is presenting Spirit of Place at Strand Aldwych during LDF. It comprises five large-scale objects that represent Amorim’s cork forest at Herdade de Rio Frio in Portugal and the four principles that the future of the forest is guided by – pright expression, drought resistance, regenerative growth and biodiversity conservation.

Mandala Lab

The Rubin Museum, which celebrates Himalayan art, is installing the Mandala Lab in Canary Wharf this September. The Lab, inspired by Buddhist principles, offers people the chance to unwind, connect with their emotions and open themselves up to wisdom through multi-sensory experiences involving percussion, video and scent.
