Lolo has just opened, marking José Pizarro’s third restaurant in Bermondsey
José Pizarro’s latest restaurant is on his home turf of Bermondsey Street, right next door to his original José Tapas Bar. It’s a beautiful space, especially considering it was previously an office; the team have done a fantastic job converting it into a cosy little restaurant, with its pale pink exterior, open kitchen with counter seating, rustic terracotta-coloured walls, modern artwork, and wildflowers.
Eat This
As with all José restaurants, this is very much a Spanish affair – though, as he told us on our visit, Lolo’s menu is made up of things that José himself likes to eat at home.
It’s open from 8am for breakfast and, rather unusually, this breakfast menu is still available at dinner. This means, YES, you can get the egg and bacon sandwich with pineapple ketchup at 10pm if you wish. Other incredible treats available all day and night include various tasty tortillas; a whole devilled eggs menu with toppings like sobrasada or smoked eel; and best of all, a beef sandwich with Ermesenda cheese and green pepper.
From 12pm onwards, the menu expands to include a big lineup of premium tinned fish and seafood; crudos like the red prawn carpaccio with chilli and orange; and small plates like the tomatoes and super fresh cheese that’s made daily in the restaurant. The standout dish of the night, however, had to be the Iberico pork ribs – a beautiful, buttery indulgence that’s an absolute must-order.
Drink This
Wines are largely from Portugal, France, and Spain, including two of Jose’s own label bottles – one rosé, and one cava which you should definitely start with. There’s also a decent orange from Suelo Vivo. Elsewhere there’s cocktails, sherry and, crucially, Damm Lemon beers.
Why Go
José is one of London’s best and friendliest chefs and Lolo is another great addition to his restaurant line-up. Yes way, José!
