For something different in Chinatown, YiQi Lah is worth seeking out. The sister restaurant to YiQi serves up dishes you won’t find elsewhere in the neighbourhood, including the UK’s first Ayam Gepuk. The Indonesian favourite sees fried chicken lightly smashed and piled with fiery chilli sambal, crunchy fried cabbage, cucumber, and a rich, nutty paste.
Also on the menu are Kam Heong dishes, beloved Malaysian stir-fries whose name translates from Cantonese as “golden fragrance”. Expect an intense, savoury flavour built from a fusion of Chinese, Malay, and Indian influences, think curry powders, curry leaves, dried shrimp, and a heap of aromatics. One thing to note: YiQi Lah doesn’t serve any booze.
