Rumblings of a collaboration between celebrated chef Larry Jayasekara and gallerist Tim Jefferies began back in 2022, but it wasn’t until spring 2024 that The Cocochine officially launched on Mayfair’s Bruton Place, joining the likes of Bellamy’s and Michelin-starred Umu. Though there’s a definite French influence – both in techniques and ingredients – Jayasekara’s menu draws from a wide pool of inspirations, number one being “the joy of eating”. As for the restaurant as a whole, the common theme is old-school hospitality; expect amuse-bouches, wine pairings with each dish, attentive waiters and a no-online-booking policy. Three courses here will set you back £145, with an insane bread course of caramelised onion brioche brought out between starter and main so you don’t fill up (very wise). But if you want a taste of The Cocochine without going the whole hog, head to its sister deli across the road, Rex, where you can pick up pastries, cakes, heat-at-home hotpots, pies, Wellingtons and sandwiches, all prepared by a team of chefs under the guidance of Jayasekara: diffusion-line Mayfair luxe.
