With the Mickalene Thomas: All About Love, the Hayward Gallery is looking back over two decades of the celebrated artist and portraitist’s work. Known for her large-scale paintings of Black women luxuriating in repose and for her use of collage techniques, Thomas also references contemporary feminist literature and the history of European painting in her work, which she uses to claim space for Black and LGBTQIA+ people in art history. As well as featuring paintings, photographs, collages and installations by Thomas, the show will also see the gallery transformed with bespoke wallpapers, furnishings and textiles to evoke her 1970s childhood.
