A wise man once said ‘Musicians should go to a yard sale and buy an old fucking drum set and get in their garage and just suck…get their friends to come in and they’ll suck, too. And then they’ll fucking start playing and they’ll have the best time they’ve ever had in their lives and then all of a sudden they’ll become Nirvana.’ that man was Dave Grohl…and that’s what came into our head as The Wytches surf doom sounds came to life at Dalston’s Tispy Bar last night. If Nirvana were to start up in 2013 this is quite possibly what they’d sound like. Yeah we know!
The eerie sounds erupting from singer Kristian Bell’s voice box sounded that of a possessed man, screeching and screaming with a raw growl always with a mound of hair frantically shaking as the noise picked up into a grunge frenzie. Yes these young’ens have crafted something that is actually exciting, both in the craft of song and lyrically with strange but intriguing phrases that stick out and cleverly catch your ear.
With tracks like ‘Beehive Queen’ it’s like Jack White is doing vocals on an Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster track for ‘The Exorcisim of Emily Rose’ movie…and it’s awesome. The Brighton based trio are definitely one to keep and eye on, their evil little punk noise has embed it’s dirty desert whips and melancholic shuffles into our bones and we are well up for this ride.
