16TH APRIL 2014
With their sparkling sass and peppy soul-pop, Lucius have had little trouble so far in making a name for themselves – especially when it comes to giving good shows. Their shows have been noted (by critics and fans alike) as nights of warm, fervent fun, and listening to their music makes it easy to see why. These are five Brooklynites with reams of retro style and a penchant for a punchy melody – and luckily, no plans to disappoint.
Taking the stage at Hackney’s Oslo, lead singers Jess and Holly were perfectly coiffed with sharp platinum bobs and matching rainbow sequins. Scattered across the background were the slickly suited remaining members (Dan, Peter and Andrew), positioned to create a perfectly symmetrical stage arrangement – a piece of pop art in itself.
Starting off the set with Americana anthem ‘Tempest’, the girls were straight to business. Their voices, which are already pretty darn impressive in recordings, sound even better live. Winding in and out of melodies, they clearly relish being on the stage, and their enthusiasm is fantastically infectious. Highlights include the stomping crowd-pleaser ‘Nothing Ordinary’, and an ethereal encore of ‘Two Of Us On The Run’ which saw them all climb amongst the crowd for an uplifting warble.
It was a night of smoky colours, handclaps, cowbells and maracas – and merely confirmed that all those rumours were true. Lucius give good gig – pretty flawless in fact – but they also give VERY good party. Catch them while you can.
