We’re not normally fans of the long, dark winter nights except when light festivals come to town and Crystal Palace Park is getting in on the action by playing host to Lightopia. The fest mixes ancient Chinese symbols (each lantern used in the display is handmade using traditional Chinese methods) and Christmas magic, resulting in a 2km long illumination trail.
You can expect to see 22 trees lit up, a 10-metre long phoenix set on 50,000 sq ft of lights, digitally projected dinosaurs in the dinosaur park, a butterfly field and a rainbow road. The Crystal Palace itself is being reborn, becoming a Palace of Lanterns installation thanks to some clever 3D mapping projection.
