3 SUMI

SUMI

If you like your sushi and don’t mind paying for the good stuff (like dropping £50 on a lunch) then Sumi is well worth checking out. Sumi is in fact, the ‘casual’ sibling to Michelin-starred Endo at The Rotunda, where the 20-course omakase menu will set you back £195 per head. At Sumi, which has taken on the old Andina site on Westbourne Grove, Endo Kazutoshi has created a slightly more ‘everyday’ menu – a tight selection of nigiri, sashimi, and temaki sushi, as well as a few snacks and larger dishes such as wagyu steak. If you want to keep it slightly respectable, however, take our tip and ignore the larger plates altogether and concentrate on the excellent snacks and sushi. It ain’t cheap, but you won’t regret coming here if you want to eat some of the best sushi in London.

4 BIBIDA

BIBIDA

Can’t decide between Korean and Japanese food? Fancy KFC as well as sushi? You can get both at Notting Hill spot Bibida. On the Korean side, you can get everything from beef bulgogi and seafood pancake to dolsot bibimbap and kimchi stew, and on the Japanese front, there”s katsu curry, agedashi tofu, ramen and range of nigiri, temaki, sashimi and uramaki to choose from, so you can mix and match to your heart’s content.

1 Hillgate Street, Notting Hill Gate, London

"A cosy Korean restaurant nestled among Notting Hill’s colourful houses. This is my go-to comfort food spot, ideal for an affordable and relaxed lunch or dinner. Honestly, everything on the menu is delicious. Be sure to try the Tuna Chotoro, Seafood Pancake, and Bibimbap."

5 ZEPHYR

ZEPHYR

After starting out doing Peruvian food, the Pachamama team has moved over into the Med, and the first restaurant they did that with was Zephyr in Notting Hill. Taking inspo from the Greek islands, Zephyr serves up dishes like seabass carpaccio with lemon oil and bottarga; smoked aubergine with roasted sesame; giant butter beans baked with olives and feta; octopus with fava purée; porterhouse with lemon-thyme jus; and olive oil cheesecake. If you fancy a drink before or after dinner, you can head downstairs to cocktail bar Naked & Famous, which has seventies-inspired decor, late night hours, and tequila and mezcal based cocktails on the menu.

100 Portobello Road, London W11 2QD

"A stylish Greek restaurant with viral interiors. Perfect for a romantic dinner or a girls' night out. Check out the bar downstairs."

DORIAN

"One of the best places in London for vibes and a cool crowd. A modern European bistro with an ever-changing seasonal menu, great for a sophisticated yet unpretentious dining experience."

7 LAYLA BAKERY

LAYLA BAKERY

Layla on Portobello Road specialises in baking with wild grains and using ancient traditions, so not only do they work closely with their suppliers but they are all about sourcing seasonal ingredients and preventing food waste too. And that means you can expect sausage rolls made using left over croissant dough (and HG Walter pork) on the menu, as well as other baked goods including wildfarmed peanut chocolate cookies and rhubarb cardamom pastries.

332 Portobello Road, London

"My favourite bakery in Notting Hill, hidden away at the end of Portobello Road. A true gem for artisan pastries, sourdough bread, and excellent coffee. Come early, as by midday, there’s a long queue of locals, and getting a coveted spot in the sun will be nearly impossible."

8 JULIE'S

JULIE'S

Known for being a popular celeb haunt back in the day, playing host to everyone from Tina Turner and Mick Jagger to Kate Moss and Princess Di, Julie’s in Holland Park closed in 2015. It then re-opened in 2019, just time to celebrate its 50th anniversary, before closing again in 2023. It was re-opened again in 2024 by Tara MacBain and Chef Patron Owen Kenworthy (ex-Brawn and The Pelican) with a modern French brassiere menu, including lobster soufflé, escargots with soft polenta, boeuf bourguignon and chocolate mousse, and plenty of martinis.

135 Portland Rd, London W11 4LW

"A charming and historic spot with an elegant yet relaxed atmosphere, serving French cuisine. It has a lovely terrace, perfect for warm evenings."

9 GRANGER & CO

GRANGER & CO

Aussie Bill Granger has made a chain out of his eponymous restaurants, and like the others, the KX branch serves up an eclectic menu that draws influence from around the world. The dinner menu consists of small plates, bowls and grains, big plates, and BBQ – and it’s one of those where you want to order absolutely everything. We find the most winners on the small plates but it’s worth a trip down for brekkie too…those eggs are good and the ricotta hotcakes are legendary.

Granger & Co. Kings Cross, London

"The best place for brunches. Order the sweetcorn fritters with avocado salsa – the portion is generous and absolutely delicious. Expect a queue, but it’s worth the wait."

10 MAZI

MAZI

Mazi, run by husband and wife team Adrien Carre and Christina Mouratoglou, takes inspiration from traditional Greek food – tarama, tiropita, prawn saganaki, grilled octopus, stifado and loukoumades are all on the menu – but gives the dishes a modern spin, both in terms of flavour combinations and presentation. The wine list is all-Greek too so you’ll find bottles here that you likely won’t have seen before. On a sunny day, you’ll want a table in the garden…that way it’s much easier to pretend you’re on holiday in Greece.

12-14 Hillgate St, London W8 7SR

"A Greek restaurant with a modern twist. Be sure to order the Loukoumades – Greek doughnuts, crispy on the outside and fluffy inside, drizzled with honey and sprinkled with nuts."
