Clover’s has been serving the people of Brixton since 1999. It serves a menu of Caribbean crowdpleasers, like jerk chicken and saltfish, as well as burgers and wraps, alongside local beers and cocktails. Clover’s also hosts regular artists in residence, so there’s even more reason to go, besides the coffee, the food, the cocktails and the vibes.
"A longstanding neighbourhood staple."
Created by Will Bowlby, who previously worked at The Cinnamon Club, the dishes are inspired by Southern India but use British ingredients and modern flair to bring them up to date. Samphire pakoras and Keralan fried chicken have become Kricket signatures but there’s a lot to love across the menu, including the likes of Goan sausage croquettes & burnt apple chutney, claypot baked cod, duck leg seekh kebab, and Mangalorean chicken gassi. The Brixton and Canary Wharf restaurants also serve Sunday lunch menus centred around charcoal grilled tandoori chicken, grilled cauliflower and braised leg of lamb, with sides like berry pulao, black garlic & dried chilli raita, and pickled onion & pomegranate salad.
"Brixton-born and still full of flavour. Friendly, reliable and consistently great."
Had a bite in Brixton Village and looking for a post-dinner bevvy? Well, the Liquor Club is the place to go. It has a huge range of expertly curated spirits, wines and cocktails, with a focus on local, Black-owned brands. The staff have a deep knowledge of all things drink, so you can pick their brains about the best rums, whiskeys and tequilas over a boozy slushy or a cup of the signature house punch.
"Community-focused drinks and good people, tucked away in the market."
Run by self-taught baker Jackie McKinson, Aries Bakehouse is a real Brixton gem. Locals love it – and will often be seen queuing – for the croissants, pain au chocolat, pain aux raisins and sourdough loaves but it’s not just about the classics here, with Jackie also turning out bakes like jerk chicken sausage rolls and ackee & saltfish danishes. Products from small and local makers on the shelves only add to the community vibe here.
"Family-run baking with warmth at its heart. Sweet service and even sweeter pastries."
This Black-owned bookshop in Brixton specialises in children’s literature with diverse characters (in terms of race, gender and disability) and inclusive stories. The shop actually started life as a pop-up to celebrate the first anniversary of Knights Of, the publishing company run by founder Aimée Felone, but it was such a success that she turned it into a permanent store.
"A cosy pocket of culture. Grab a coffee, find a read and settle in."
