Ahead Tequila Fest which is hitting London this month, we caught up with the founder Eduardo Gomez to talk tequila, tequlia and erm…tequila.of
Where do you live in London and why?
I am currently living in Richmond. I didn’t plan it but an opportunity came up and now I wouldn’t live anywhere else. I love the park, it’s like living in the countryside only in London. The best of both worlds.
You loved Tequila so much you set up a WHOLE festival around it. How did that come about?
I do love Tequila and Mezcal and suddenly I realised that it was time to change people’s perception about these to great agave spirits – too many people still think it’s only for shotting in clubs with lime! Plus Mexican food is on the up and Mexico as a whole is becoming more popular this side of the Atlantic so it was now or never.
What are your favourite tequila cocktails and where should we be drinking them?
Tommy’s margarita with either Tequila or if I want it smoky with Mezcal! plus any twist in a classic is always good I do particularly like old fashion with a good anejo tequila and a Mezcal negroni is a winner!
What are you top tips for avoiding a tequila hangover?
My top tip is to drink clean…the less sugar (mixers) you give to your body the less hangover you will get. I only drink neat Tequila and Mezcal and I don’t down it or drink in excess (OK that might not be completely true!) that means no hangover and if that fails there’s always hair of the dog.
What would your perfect day in London entail?
Drinking mezcal on one of the rooftops of London or by the river on a sunny day! It reminds me of Mexico and that’s always a good thing.
