Kismet Review | The Globe Tavern’s Latest Residency Might Be Its Best Yet

Kismet Brings Big Meyhane Energy to Borough Market

The Globe Tavern in Borough Market is turning into a right little launchpad, having already seen TOU, Khao Bird, and Barang pass through its doors. Now it’s the turn of Dom Hamdy, behind Crispin and Bistro Freddie, who has just launched Kismet at The Globe, alongside chef Keiran Mustafa. Mustafa grew up in a Turkish-Cypriot family and has previously run his Kıbrıs meyhane pop-ups at Carousel, so this is less a new idea than one he’s been building towards. They’ve done a great job on the space, with lots of old family photos and posters on the walls, plus live Turkish music several nights a week.

Eat This

It’s a cracking menu and you should definitely order the atom (buffalo yoghurt with chilli butter) and the Tarama with bread for starters. We also loved the Bulghur Koftesi, a satisfying deep fried ball of bulgur, minced beef and walnuts, and the Sigara Boregi, little filo pastry-style rolls stuffed with feta and kasar.

You must get at least one dish from the Mangal – we went for the beef and lamb kofte, with a side of fried Cypriot potatoes and a house salad.

For dessert there’s homemade baklava, pistachio ice cream, and Turkish tea all round.

Drink This

Raki leads the drinks, and in proper meyhane fashion regulars can buy a bottle and leave it on the shelf for next time. There’s a concise list of Turkish wines – we had a decent Pet Nat and Chardonnay. It’s also worth checking out the Zeytinyagli Negroni which contains olive oil for a smoother finish.

Why Go

Great vibes and great food – if this is a dress rehearsal for a permanent restaurant, we’re all in for a treat.
