Khao Bird Review | “The Flavour Bomb-Filled Menu Doesn’t Take Itself Too Seriously”

The team behind Lucky Khao in Brighton has landed in London

Khao Bird has taken over the stoves at The Globe Tavern in Borough Market, in the space that up until recently housed TĀTĀ Eatery’s TOU sando bar. Unlike TOU, it’s a permanent residency with a menu that focuses on northern Thai BBQ, featuring fun takes on trad dishes using local ingredients where possible. The restaurant is the sequel to Brighton restaurant Lucky Khao and head chef Luke Larsson has an impressive CV, having worked at Samuay & Sons; our fave Bangkok spot 100 Mahaseth; and Bo.lan.

Eat This

We loved the Bangkok hot salads – the stone fruit Yam Som and Sussex Veg Som Tam – both spicy, sour, sweet and 100% our vibe. The Shan meatballs were another highlight; chicken meatballs in caul fat, cola glazed with crispy garlic and pickles – perhaps the standout dish of the night, though the Pork Hung Lee Burmese curry came a close second.

Drink This

There’s a fun list of cocktails and of course natural wines and beers. Keep it classic with a Chang, put out the burn with a Pina Colada slushie, or sip on the smooth Calamansi martinis.

Why Go

For the flavour bomb-filled menu that doesn’t take itself too seriously – Khao Bird is well worth a visit.
