Gruesome. Yes. Joanna Gruesome. Not Joanna Newsom. Coz that wouldn’t fit at all. New album, new track. Feedback on the feedback? It’s working for Joanna Gruesome. ‘Last Year’s’ squalling Intro/Outro has a nice, sharp filling. Like a kimchi, chilli and cheese sandwich. Their melodic scream therapy could be pitched either side of the Atlantic, from any time in the last 40 years, but somehow manage to sound fresh and hungry (for peanut butter).

Lyrics are surreal (apparently it’s a song about experiencing tragedy and the occult in a water park) but acts as a simple frame for their sound. Hookier than a Von Trapp coat rack. Speedier than Senor Gonzalez. Jangly as Mr T’s neck gold. The harmonies shouldn’t fit, but they do, and the urgent crashing cymbals are a signal to GO FASTER!

It’s going to be a great album and busy tour for Alanna McArdle (vocals), Owen Williams (guitar), Max Warren (bass), George Nicholls (guitar) and David Sandford(drums) if this new offering is anything to go by.
