The National Gallery is rounding out its bicentenary celebrations with a big street party in Trafalgar Square on 26th July, with a little help from artist Jeremy Deller. With his ‘The Triumph of Art’ project, he’s been involved in a number of performances around the country for the gallery’s 200th birthday, including folklore parades through the streets of Llandudno, Derry/Londonderry, Dundee and Plymouth.
Now he’s bringing it to Trafalgar Square, which will include a Bacchanalian procession (featuring some of the characters and costumes from the other regional events) from King Charles Street, along Whitehall to the square. A giant puppet called Quingo Starlequinn, made by art collective Do Your Own Thing, will be making an appearance, with DJs playing from inside it, and you can also expect performances, making workshop, live music, a tea party and more. It’s totally free and you don’t need a ticket so just turn up and get stuck in.
