We’re starting the new year with a cold snap
We got a lot of rain thanks to Storm Bert and Storm Conall in November, and we had a very brief flurry of snow in the capital on 19th November, but that was the extent of the snow for in 2024. As the Met Office, the UK’s national weather service, writes: “We are more likely to see snow between January and March than in December”, so it tracks that we only got wind and rain at the back end of last year.
However 2025 looks to be following that trend as temperatures are dropping this weekend.
Will it snow in London in 2025?
As mentioned above, it’s certainly cold enough for snow at the moment and the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow from noon on Saturday 4th January to 9am on Mon 6th January 2025, covering all of England, bar the south west, and Wales. That means that heavy snow could cause some disruptions to rail and air travel and delays on roads, as well as a small chance of power cuts.
However, as it’s quite a wide area covered by the warning, there is still uncertainty about which parts of the country will see snow and for how long, especially in the south east where milder temperatures could quickly turn snow into rain. So London may or may not be getting another brief flurry, and if snow does come, it’s likely to be a lot of slush rather than a picture-perfect blanketing.
